Five criticised for unfair quizzes

6:28pm Monday 11th August 2008

Channel Five has been criticised by media watchdog Ofcom for a series of unfair premium-rate quizzes.

Six separate incidents were adjudicated on by Ofcom on Five's The Great Big British Quiz and Quiz Call on Five's digital channel, Five US.

The broadcaster either gave the wrong answer to competitions, in which viewers took part through premium rate phone lines or free on the internet, or the solution was too obscure.

In Quiz Call, broadcast in May last year, viewers were asked to identify a series of "words starting with S and ending with T". The presenter revealed that one of the answers was "sailcloth", before apologising on air that this was incorrect.

In The Great Big British Quiz in December 2006 another wrong answer was given to the question "15 cats meet three cats each. Those cats all meet 25 cats and they all go for a curry! How many cats?" Five said the answer was 2,641, when it should have been 2,461.

Wrong answers were also given on two other occasions on The Great Big British Quiz in 2006, in Catch of the Day and Get Sum.

Regulator Ofcom criticised two other competitions - Which Signs Are Wrong?, and Which Flags Are Wrong?, in the Great British Quiz.

Viewers were asked to spot the deliberate mistakes in graphics of road signs and national flags. The watchdog said it was doubtful that the errors, in the quizzes broadcast in 2006, could have been detected by viewers.

In Which Flags are Wrong?, the Japanese flag was altered by increasing the size of the red disc by 5%.

Ofcom said the quizzes were in breach of the broadcasting code.
